The country's first and largest beer festival dedicated to the art of wood and barrel aging returned to Chicago on Saturday afternoon and evening, November 7. A record crowd of 1500 enjoyed over 135 beers from 53 different breweries, representing 18 states.
Smuttynose Brewing Company from Portsmouth, New Hampshire earned Best-of-Show honors with its Farmhouse Ale, a Saison aged in a neutral oak barrel with brettanomyces claussenii. Runner-up was Goose Island Beer Company Bourbon County Brand Stout, an Imperial Stout aged in 6-13 year old Heaven Hill bourbon barrels.
Illinois Craft Brewers Guild members earned 12 category medals along with the BOS runner up, including 5 of the 8 category gold medals. But out-of-state breweries also performed admirably, as the medal table included golds by Allagash Brewing Company of Portland, Maine, Firestone Walker Brewing Company of Paso Robles, California, and the overall champion from Smuttynose. Medalists came from 10 different states, more than half of all the states represented.
Thanks to all the participating breweries and everyone who attended. Special thanks go to our industry sponsors (listed above) and our wonderful crew of volunteers who helped make this event possible.
